Details

Cyanide ions react with chlorine to form cyanogen chloride, which opens a pyridine ring giving glutaconic dialdehyde. The barbituric acid derivative on the test zone of the strip reacts with the dialdehyde and produces a red polymethine dye. The pH is optimized by the addition of a buffer mixture. The cyanide concentration is measured semiquantitatively by visual comparison of the reaction zone of the test strip with the fields of a color scale.
