What is 1,4-Butanediol used for?
1,4-Butanediol is a solvent manufactured in various chemical grades (purity) for a variety of applications which include plasticizer manufacturing, polymers, polyurethanes, urethane polymers, solvents, tetrahydrafuran (THF) and other industrial products. 1,4-Butanediol is also commonly used in the manufacture of cleaning compounds, cosmetics and printing inks.
Esters: Low molecular weight glycols and Polybutylene terphthalate (PBT) are engineered plastics which include monomeric plasticizers like 1,4-Butanediol. the polyester gylcols are used as soft segments in polyurethanes and are manufactured by combining 1,4-Butanediol with various acids like adipic acid and sebacic acid (which are both di-basic acids).
Polyurethanes: 1,4-Butanediol is most commonly used for both hard and soft segments of polyurethane manufacturing. Within the soft segment of polyurethane manufacturing, 1,4-Butanediol is used as a polyester diol such as polybutylene adipate glycol. Within the hard segment of polyurethane manufacturing, 1,4-Butanediol is used as a chain extender. 1,4-Butanediol is also commonly used in the hard segments of some polyurethanes like those made with either TDI or MDI. 1,4-Butanediol is frequently used as a cross-linker which provides an excellent balance between low-temperature flexibility and hardness.
