The Reference Solution 290 checks performance of freezing-point osmometers in the critical area of normal serum values. It contains known and controlled quantities of some of the same solutes which comprise osmotically active particles of serum. It is pipetted into a tube and run just like normal serum. It runs as the first and last samples in a series of tests to monitor operator technique and instrument performance. It does not require mixing, reconstituting or refrigerating; one-year shelf life.
